Kirin 980 | World’s Most Powerful Mobile Processor

World’s first 7nm processor has been revealed at IFA 2018. Huawei has introduced HiSilicon Kirin 980 to the world and there are plethora of features to look forward to. The processor will be launched in the Mate 20 series. 7nm processors have a clear advantage over the previous 10nm processors in terms of power and efficiency.

HiSilicon Kirin 980 is manufactured by TSMC. The processor uses 8-core CPU design with two high-performance cores and two power-efficient cores. The processor is based on Cortex-76 cores and all of them are clustered on to a single chip to make use of ARM’s DynamIQ architecture. The second cluster consists of 4 Cortex A-55 cores. There is flex scheduling on board as well that helps assign right tasks to right cores.

The GPU is Mali G-76 which offers tremendous performance and efficiency gains over its predecessor. The GPU has a power increase of 46% and saves power by 176%. These numbers are huge and the progress that GPUs are showing is tremendous.

Kirin 980 will have 37% better performance over the outgoing Kirin 970. We are simply blown away by the progress Huawei is showing in terms of power and the overall package. Huawei has claimed that Kirin 980 is 40% better in terms of overall performance than the Snapdragon 845 which has been the king of 2018 flagships.

7nm manufacturing process isn’t the only highlight. Kirin 980 is the first chipset to support 2133MHz LPDDR4X memory and it also incorporates a dedicated dual NPU chip. Huawei calls the latter “Dual-Brain Power” and it can recognize up to 4,500 images per minute, which is almost 120% faster than last year’s single NPU chip on the Kirin 970 SoC.

This year’s ISP is further improved. Kirin 980 delivers a 46% increase in data throughput and there is better multi-camera support on-board. Other nifty features like new HDR color reproduction technology, Multi-pass noise reduction and better motion tracking.
